Ernestina de Champourcin
1905 – 1999
Poet · Generación del 27
Ernestina Michels de Champourcin was born in Vitoria in 1905 and died in Madrid in 1999. A poet of the Generación del 27, she was part of the group of intellectuals and artists known as Las Sinsombrero, a disciple of Juan Ramón Jiménez and connected to the Lyceum Club Femenino of Madrid, one of the pioneering spaces of Spanish feminine culture in the nineteen twenties and thirties.
After the Spanish Civil War she went into exile in Mexico, where she continued her work as a poet and translator, maintaining her bond with the Spanish literary tradition from afar. Her oeuvre, marked by introspection, faith and an avant-garde sensibility, is today experiencing a clear rediscovery: complete works editions, academic studies and documentaries that vindicate her figure and those of her companions of Las Sinsombrero.
The name Champourcin is no coincidence for this gallery: [THE GALLERY MUST DECIDE AND COMPLETE — real family connection, or a conscious tribute to a woman who understood art and the written word as an act of freedom]. From her we inherit the vocation for the avant-garde, the inward gaze and the commitment to an honest and personal expression.
